  • Tributes paid after sudden death of popular East Kilbride Manager



    Staff and shoppers in East Kilbride’s Debenhams have been left in shock after the sudden death of a popular manager.

    Paul Doherty (40), who was the head of menswear in the town store for over eight years but had been with the company for 11 years,
    Store staff and paramedics rushed to Paul’s aid after he took unwell in an office but it is understood he passed away later in hospital.
    Town centre security staff were also alerted but paramedics had already arrived at the store and were battling to save Paul before he was rushed to hospital.
    Police were also on the scene and confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances surroundings Paul’s death.


    Friends and colleagues of Paul have described him as “always smiling” and loving life and said he will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
    Debenhams area manager Susan Reid said: “Paul Doherty was a highly thought of, popular manager at the Debenhams East Kilbride store and we are deeply saddened by his passing.
    “Paul was always smiling, happy and loved life.
    “He was loved and respected by all his colleagues and he will be sorely missed.
    “Paul’s colleagues have been offered support through this difficult time and our thoughts are with Paul’s family.”
    Heartbroken relative Laura Doherty paid tribute to Paul on her Facebook page saying: “Can’t believe I am writing this, our wonderful Paul Doherty passed away suddenly yesterday.
    “Our whole family is devastated, he was the best brother in law, son, brother and uncle we could ever have wished for.
    “ We all loved him so much, we have tried to contact all of his friends, please message me if you need to.
    “RIP Paul, we will love you forever, miss you already xxx.”
    Friends also took to social media to pay tribute to him.
    Stephen Hazelton said: “I worked with Paul for about four years in East Kilbride and you couldn’t have met a nicer genuine guy who would make time for everyone around him.”
    Doco Martimos posted: “Paul was a fantastic person, really kind- hearted, cheery and always made a point of coming over and seeing how you were if you were just passing through his work.”
    Lindy Mcsherry went on: “I’ve had the pleasure of working with Paul for almost nine years and he has helped me throughout my career with Debenhams.”
    And Ian Gilmartin said: “I’ve lost one of my best friends, totally gutted.
    “My thoughts are with his family, I’m sure many others like myself cared for him very much.”
    And Liz Barclay said: “It is heartbreaking news.
    “I am his next door neighbour and he will be sadly missed. He was the nicest and most sincere of people.
    “My thoughts are with all his family at this difficult time.”
    PC Laura Taylor, from East Kilbride police station, said: “We can confirm officers were called to Debenhams in East Kilbride at 12.10pm on Friday.
    “There was a report of a male requiring medical attention.
    “Officers attended to assist security and ambulance staff.
    “We can confirm the individual sadly passed away.
    “There are no suspicious circumstances and a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal in due course.”
